Design Takeaways

Participating in Ubisoft NEXT's Game Design challenge gave me insight into the workflows and constraints that designers face during the design process. I was given an objective of creating a new enemy type for the Far Cry franchise. I was selected as a finalist in the competition.

During the challenge, I played Far Cry 6 to understand how the existing roster of enemies was implemented, how they worked with existing systems, and how they provided unique challenges to the player. Once I had spent enough time studying the game and its loops, I worked away to design a new enemy type that added a unique player experience to the game.

The challenge is a three phase competition, beginning with creating a pitch document, then creating documentation, and then revising the initial creative brief as a verbal presentation. I had a lot of fun participating in the challenge and learned a lot about building designs around existing systems and setting goals to drive the player experience forward.
